While the Air Jordan 5 may not be as popular here in Europe as it is in the United States, there is still a very interesting story behind this shoe. Want to know more about it? Then don't wait any longer and read on!

The History of the Air Jordan 5

A fun fact is that this Air Jordan 5 actually didn’t have an official number in the Jordan line. It was just an "Air Jordan," and only in 2000 did it receive its official number 5. The model was ahead of its time: it was the first basketball shoe with reflective materials, designed to stand out under camera flashes. Ironically, those reflective elements were later banned in some competitions.

Rich History

In addition, the AJ5 has a surprising connection to the film world: the transparent sole we know today was originally developed for the Nike Mag from *Back to the Future II*, also a design by Tinker Hatfield. And of course, we can't forget the "Grape" inspiration; Hatfield was inspired by grapes when sketching, which later reappeared in the legendary Air Jordan 11 Concord. The Air Jordan 5 was inspired by WWII fighter jets, which is reflected in the "teeth" on the midsole.

Air Jordan 5 on the Court

The Air Jordan 5 also brought a few unique moments on the basketball court. For example, Michael Jordan wore sneakers with his number 23 embroidered on them on Valentine's Day in 1990, because his regular jersey number 23 had disappeared. During the 1989 playoffs, the Bulls team showed how stylish they were by all wearing black sneakers; a year later, they added white laces, which later returned in special editions like the Jordan 5 Reimagined.

Famous Collaborations and Wearers

The Air Jordan 5 was originally released as a high-top, but thanks to players like Mike Bibby, low versions also appeared. In addition to basketball stars, there are notable names who wore the AJ5: Phil Knight, the founder of Nike, posed with them for People Magazine, while Virgil Abloh, who grew up in Chicago during the Bulls dynasty, wore his first Jordans in this model. His love for the design later inspired the Off-White x Jordan 5 collaborations. NBA sneakerhead P.J. Tucker also honored Abloh by wearing custom Jordan 5s full of personal messages.
